What is a jet stream?

Huge air masses move from West to East at high altitude. These jet stream (in English Jet Streams) circling the earth removed from its surface by 10-15 km, at speeds over 200 km/h Over each hemisphere has its own wind system. High flying planes use them, going through them faster. If you have to fly in the opposite direction, the pilots strive to avoid jet streams.
