Chapter 9. Vision one and two eyes

Play photos in books and magazines are, of course, the same properties as the original images: they also become prominent when viewed with one eye and with the proper distance. As different pictures taken by devices with different focal lengths, to find an appropriate distance for viewing have a test. Closing one eye, hold the picture at arm's length so that its surface is perpendicular to a beam of view, and your open eyes I saw against the middle of the picture. Now zoom in gradually a picture, without ceasing to look at him; you can easily catch the moment when he will become the greatest relief.

Many photos vague and flat under normal viewing, get depth and clarity, if you look at them in the described manner. Often when such viewing become visible sheen of water and other purely stereoscopic effects.

Surprising that such simple facts are little known, although almost all reported here is presented in popular books more than half a century ago. In “principles of physiology of the mind” Century carpenter's book, published in Russian translation in 1877, - read about viewing the following photos:

“It is remarkable that the effect of this method of examining photographic paintings (one eye) is not limited to the selection of the corporeality of the subject; other features are also of a much greater vividness and reality, adding to the illusion. This applies mainly to the image of standing water - the weaknesses of photographic pictures under normal conditions. Exactly, if you look at this image of water both eyes, the surface seems to wax, but if you look through one eye, it is often noticed striking clarity and depth. The same can be said regarding the different properties of surfaces that reflect light, such as bronze and ivory. The material from which made the item shown in the photo, is recognized much easier, if you look with one eye, not two.

Let us turn our attention to another circumstance. If images with increasing gain in vitality, while they decrease, on the contrary, lose in this respect. The small pictures come out, however, sharper and clearer, but they are flat, do not give the impression of depth and relief. Cause after all this it should be clear: with the reduction of the photos is reduced and the corresponding perspective distance, which is usually already too little.
