The Europeans call it the wonder of the world the great wall of China, and the Chinese themselves - WAN Lee Cheng, which means "wall 10 thousand Li." "10 thousand" in translation from Chinese is 5 thousand kilometers. But in reality, the wall is much longer. According to some, initially, its length reaches 10 thousand kilometers up to 7-10 meters and the width was equal to 5 meters. And if you take all the materials used in the construction of the great wall of China, and to build from them a wall thickness of 1 meter and a height of 5 meters, its length will be enough to encircle the entire globe. Interestingly, the Chinese wall can be seen from the moon's surface - that's what it is big!
Construction began in 475 year BC on the orders of Qin Shi Huang, the founder of the Qin dynasty. Built a wall from the ground, stamping it and capping bricks from clay or stones. Took part in building more than a million people. The work was very heavy, had to work in places where no foot may tread. Many workers could not withstand the tough conditions and the harsh, cold climate and was killed. The remains of them, covered with soil, filled the interior part of the wall.
The wall continued to build and during the reign of the Han dynasty (206 B.C. - 220 A.D.). However, those sections of the great wall that has survived to our time, were built primarily in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). By this time began to use brick and stone blocks that made the wall more reliable.
During the Imperial reign of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), the wall was almost destroyed, preserved only part of it is near Beijing.
