HOW DID CANDY?

This is a favorite of all treat appeared in the... randomness! More than 3 thousand years ago the ancient Egyptians had accidentally mixed with honey, figs and nuts - so there was the first candy in the world. During excavations in Egypt, archaeologists have found pictures and records containing information about looked like candy and how they were prepared. Sugar at that time was not known yet, and instead were used dates and honey.

For Eastern candy made from almonds and figs. In some Eastern countries each tribe had its own pastry chef and secret recipes. To this day the Arab countries are famous for their unprecedented variety of sweets. It is the Arabs first began to cook sugar to produce new kinds of confectionery.

In ancient Rome was cooked with nuts and poppy seeds with honey and covered with sesame seeds, soaked in honey. The result is something similar to nougat.

In Ancient Russia, too, was something like candy: they were made from maple syrup, molasses and honey.

The first chocolates were made in Brussels by pharmacist John Neuhaus (John Neuhaus) in 1857. Inventing a remedy against cough, he accidentally got the product, which we now call the chocolates. In 1912, his son entered chocolates on sale. And Golden wrappers for these sweets invented his wife, after which they went like hot cakes.

This sweet treat was popular in all ages among all segments of the population. However, for a long time it was absolutely inaccessible to ordinary people, and was the privilege of the rich and noble classes.

And the word "candy" comes from the Latin confectum - "made". This term was originally used by apothecaries in the XVI century. He called this word sugared or processed into jam fruit is used for medicinal purposes.
